How to Access Microsoft Update Catalog with Internet Explorer/IE 11 in Windows 10 Tech. Preview
Often times hardware manufacturers won't provide 64 bit version of their old hardware device drivers. But luckily, for some old but very popular hardwares, Microsoft provides 64 bit device drivers through Microsoft Update Catalog.
But there's a catch. You can only download drivers from this site using Internet Explorer—at least version 6.
Take for example my old printer Canon BJC-265SP. I can't find 64 bit driver for this printer even after Googling it around the Web, but it's available in the catalog.
So I was surprised when I can't get IE 11 in Windows 10 Enterprise Tech. Preview to open this site,
Usually after asking to install an ActiveX add-on, IE would be able to browse and download from this catalog. But this time, there's no such familiar confirmation message.
The instruction put up on the site says that I have to enable the "Userdata persistence" setting. But when I checked it out, IE 11 had already enabled it by default,
So I tried to uncheck the "Enable Protected Mode (requires restarting Internet Explorer)" from Security tab of Internet options,
and thank God, this time it can actually install this ActiveX add-on,
Now I can download my old printer's 64 bit device drivers,
I hope Microsoft will provide more goodies drivers like this for other old hardwares. Thank you, Microsoft![]
